This Town Has Been on Fire Since 1962

Centralia Pennsylvania has been on fire since May 1962. There’s enough fuel for it to burn for another 250 years. Some geologists even think it could burn for another 1000 years.

It all started when the town council needed to get rid off the landfill before Memorial Day, so they decided to burn the trash. The only problem was the landfill was sitting on top of an abandoned strip mine.
