Did you know that Indonesia was colonized by the Portuguese way back in the 1500s, even before the Dutch arrived? One of the biggest signs is in our language, which has many words that derive from Portuguese, including “meja” for table and “keju” for cheese. And since Portuguese and Spanish are really similar, Indonesians can recognize many Spanish words too – something I got to reflect more on during my recent holiday in Spain!
