The first announcement that America existed wasn’t made by a Founding Father. It was made by a German immigrant, in German, for a community of immigrants, one day before any English language paper in the colonies printed a word.

Heinrich Miller arrived from the German principality of Waldeck decades before the Revolution and built one of the most widely read newspapers in Pennsylvania, serving the large German community that made up roughly a third of the colony’s population.
